Liam Is 4, I’m 35, and We Bought a New House

A lot has happened since COVID-19 became a giant burden in everyone’s life, but one thing that definitely was not happening was blogging. Not for me, anyway. The pandemic may have left other bloggers with more free time to work on their blogs, but it was the complete opposite for me.

Seeing as though I haven’t posted anything since April, I feel like I can’t just jump right back into it like everything is normal. You need to be filled in on some things, right?

Maybe not, but that’s what I’m going to do, anyway.

Liam Is 4 Years Old Now!

Liam turned 4 in July, and I know, I know. Social distancing. Whatever. We had a party, and it was a carnival themed party and it was great.

Liam got lots of gifts, but the “big thing” he got this year was a trampoline. We bought a new house in June (more on that later), and now that we have an amazing backyard with lots of shade, it was time for us to get a trampoline.

Also, because he’s 4 now, he’s old enough to play soccer. He got a lot of soccer stuff for his birthday. Right now, we’re waiting to find out when his season will start. It should be any day now, as long as it isn’t canceled because of the coronavirus.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this on my blog before, but I played soccer for 11 years. Basically, what I’m saying is, both of my children are destined to become soccer stars because I will pass those genes down to them.

Both Liam and London started a new daycare today, too. They’ve gone to the same daycare since they were babies, but because of the pandemic, that daycare shut down permanently.

From March until last week, they’ve been home with me. Up until last week, I was also working full-time remotely. If that sounds impossible, that’s because it was. I wish that after all that time, I could write up a bunch of parenting pro tips that I’ve learned over the past few months, but that won’t be happening at all.

All I learned was that it would be impossible for me to work from home while also watching two toddlers, and that I love daycare. Once we found out that their daycare was shut down, I started calling around to every single daycare in the area.

A lot of them were full. Some of them had space but were $500/week. We were put on waitlists. To sum it all up, it was an enormous pain in the ass, and we’re now paying over $100/week more than we were originally paying.

Which is not ideal considering we bought a house and I had mapped out our entire budget based on our previous daycare tuition.

I’m 35

There is not an exclamation point at the end of that heading, because it is not exciting. Yes, I’ve lived another year and I’m healthy. Whoopdeedoo.

I’m also only 5 years away from 40, so that’s a nightmare.

Cameron threw me a surprise party, and I got lots of awesome gifts from everyone! I also have an Amazon gift card that I need to use, so if you have any suggestions, please comment below.

Today, as a birthday celebration, I went to the dentist for my 6 month check up and let my dentist know that Britney Spears and I share a common problem. My front tooth gap is also trying like hell to pull a Jesus Christ and resurrect itself back into the center of my mouth.

I’m not having it. It is barely noticeable to the untrained eye, but he referred me to this orthodontist that is apparently one of the top 5 Invisalign providers in the country.

Basically, he said that I could go get a quote for free and if it’s some asinine amount, he can make me a retainer for $250 that will prevent my teeth from shifting any further.

Look, I had big ass metal braces for 3 years. I’ll be damned if my teeth get messed up now.

Hopefully, they can get me in this week for a consultation, so stay tuned for another episode of Rachel’s Perfectionist First World Problems.

We Bought a New House!

We weren’t even really looking for a house, honestly. Last year, we got pre approved for a loan, but I’m so picky that I never really saw any houses that I liked.

Since then, we’ve just been “casually looking.”

Then, one day at like 6am I got a notification on the Realtor app that a house had matched our criteria. I opened it up, but there weren’t any pictures. I read the description and told Cameron that it sounded like it would be awesome, so we should keep an eye on it.

A few hours later, the exterior pictures were up, but none of the interior pictures were posted yet. Regardless, we still knew that we needed to see it. Right now, houses around here are only on the market for one day, and then they’re sold.

We were in a hard situation because like I said, we hadn’t gotten a loan pre approval in over a year. We weren’t even working with a real estate agent at the time. Basically, we had to rush to get ahold of the realtor we used when we bought our last house, and hope that she could get us in to see the house. Then, we had to contact a lender and see if we could get pre approved again.

When we came to see the house, we found out they had showings scheduled back to back all day. We put in an offer that day, after the house already had 4 offers. Somehow, we ended up getting the house, and I’m not sure how we managed to get so lucky.

We put our house on the market and it also sold in a day, thankfully.

But yeah, now you can expect to see lots of interior design and home project blogs. We’ve done a lot already.

I painted the dining room and sitting room (hated it), we hired a landscaper, we hired someone to put in a fence, we hired painters to paint all the high walls and ceilings, we’ve bought tons of furniture.

Our dining room and sitting room have a Mackinac Island / Grand Hotel / Cupola Bar vibe to them. We went to the Grand Hotel last year and loved it so much that we decided to make part of our house feel like it.

Also, as I’m sure you all know. I love England. Our basement is being made to look like the London Underground.

We’re not completely finished with anything yet, though, so I’ll post once we are. Then, you can see a before and after. In the meantime, check out my Instagram. I’m posting pictures there as each of these projects come along.

I think I’ve covered all of our major life updates that have occurred over the past few months.

Let me know how you’ve been coping with the pandemic! Now that I’m actually getting some time to myself, I plan on trying out some of these relaxing staycation ideas for adults that I posted about months ago.
